CANBERRA has been named the nation’s most liveable city and, for the first time, beaten Adelaide to the title.
The Property Council of Australia this morning released the latest results from “My City: The People’s Verdict “, a national poll that tests views on the liveability of our cities. The survey, now in its fourth year, surveyed 5400 people across 10 cities, asking them to rate their city on the issues that matter to them. The results show a change in the liveability scores of many of our top cities.
Catherine Carter, Property Council ACT executive director said: “This is the people’s verdict on their own city – a report card for governments on how residents believe their cities are performing in terms of liveability.
“Canberrans know their city is a great place to live – and now we have the positive proof that we have the nation’s most liveable city.
“While Canberra’s liveability score of 65.2 is higher than any other city, there is room for improvement. Those surveyed believe the ACT Government needs to do more to make housing affordable, supply infrastructure to keep up with demand and set a fair level of taxation when people buy or sell properties.
“To boost our liveability ranking in future years, the ACT Government must think creatively about how to increase the supply of homes, including those available for affordable rent. A city can’t be liveable if it’s not affordable,” Ms Carter said.
The Auspoll survey tested the views of 615 Canberra residents – benchmarking the nation’s capital against 17 attributes that define good cities. Canberra scored higher than any other city on six attributes:
A wide range of recreational outdoor environments
Good schools and other educational facilities
A clean, well-maintained and unpolluted city
A diverse range of people who get along well
Safe places for people and their property.
Canberra also ranked second on a further five attributes:
An attractive natural environment
Good healthcare services
An attractive look and design
Good employment and economic opportunities
Good road network and minimal traffic congestion.
Those surveyed rated the ACT Government’s performance as either “poor” or “very poor” on the following:
Making housing more affordable (56%)
Setting a fair level of taxation when buying or selling (50%)
Supplying infrastructure to keep up with demand (38%)
