APPLICATIONS for the inaugural Age Friendly Awards have opened.

Employers going the extra mile to recruit or retain older workers and businesses providing a service that takes into account needs of older customers are being encouraged to nominate. Applications close on April 14 and winners will be announced on May 21.

Endorsing the awards, Minister for Ageing, Shane Rattenbury, said: “Our society is continually improving the way it recognises the needs of older people in the community and these awards focus on two important aspects of this – older people as consumers and as employees. Canberra is continuing to develop as an age-friendly city and these awards represent another dimension of this growth.”

The employer section of the awards recognises organisations that are putting in place proven strategies that attract or retain mature-age workers, such as flexible working practices or supporting the transition from employment to retirement.

The business awards recognise a commitment to implementing strategies or infrastructure that meets the needs of older customers, for example having signs that are easy to read.

The awards are being staged in a partnership between the ACT Government and ACT and Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
