“FLIX in the Stix” is on again this Saturday Jan 31 at 6pm on the Eucalypt Lawn Australian National Botanic Gardens.
WE’RE not sure if Canberra counts as the Stix any longer, but at all events it’s a great film, music, comedy and arts festival and includes The Phone Call (UK) directed by Mat Kirkby and Flamingo Pride (Germany) directed by Tomer Eshed. You can buy burgers, pizzas and drinks.
RAW Canberra Showcase is ostensibly an emerging arts showcase, but its last two outings at the Uni Pub have drawn a huge cross-section of buyers/takers. featuring 30+ of Canberra’s best spanning genres like fashion, music, visual and performing arts, and photography, it’s switching tomorrow (Friday Jan 30) to Belconnen Arts Centre, 118 Emu Bank, Belconnen Doors open at 7:30pm.
THE Artists’ Shed, supported by the Merry Muse Tickets is presenting BluGuru in concert at the Irish Club in Weston tomorrow Fri Jan 30. THIS year’s annual “SoundOut” festival of free improvisation, free jazz and experimental music is on this Saturday and Sunday (Jan 31 and Feb 1) at the ANU’s Drill Hall Gallery. Guest artists are from Australia, Austria, Germany, New Zealand, Norway, and Switzerland. Expect free jazz, minimalist electro-acoustic and indeed everything avant-garde. “SoundOut 2015,” at the ANU Drill Hall Gallery, Kingsley St Acton, 1pm to 5pm and 7pm-11ishpm on both Jan 31 and Feb 1, tickets at the door. CANBERRA artist, Meg Morton’s exhibition of figure drawings and sculptures, “7 1/2 heads tall”, is still on at the Nishi Gallery in Kendal Lane, NewActon until Sunday, February 1 Monday to Friday 11 to 3 Saturday to Sunday 11 to 4. It features works by artists in the Colony Collective and the Nishi Arch Collective with Morton’s own life drawing groups. If you love life drawing, you’ll love this show.
THE Phoenix bar in Civic has been in touch and tonight they’ll feature The Ocean Party (Melb) Totally Mild (Melb) Black Springs (Syd) Eadie and the Doodles, the on Saturday, January 31 there’ll be Wallflower and Duck Duck Ghost.
A discussion closing night drinks will be for the show, “Sometimes there isn’t anything to get”, at Nancy Sever Gallery, 4/6 Kennedy Street, Kingston, tomorrow January 30 at 6pm. Curator Rosie Goldfeder will introduce the young Canberra artists Joel Arthur, Zoe Brand, Byrd, Hanna Hoyne whose works make up the show.
“THE Mask of Lucy Raven’s Eyes” is the latest work by Joe Woodward’s company, Shadow House PITS. Described as a mythic play about real life tragedy, it will have its first outing this Friday and Saturday (January 30 – 31) at 8pm in “Nigel and Beth’s Place in Downer”. The audience is invited to BYO drinks and nibblies and to buy tickets online at shadowhousepits.com.au/ where you will also access the address. This is all in preparation for the company’s first live streaming production at Smith’s Alternative on Sunday, March 1 at 8pm. Woodward tells us it’s “a play that challenges actors to engage highly stylised presentation with sections of gritty realism … and that includes performing with Irish (Dublin) accents. Playwright David James M is from Scotland.”
“AIR” is a retrospective of works by Artists in Residence at Strathnairn Arts, curated by Peter Haynes, a precursor to the coming national Ceramic Triennial. Running to February 15, 10am-4pm Thursday-Sunday, the show will be opened by ceramicist Anita McIntyre at 4pm this Saturday, January 31 at Strathnairn Homestead Gallery, 90 Stockdill Drive, and Holt. AIR showcases the art of Markus Bohm, Ute Bohm, Brenda Danbrook, Daniel Evans, Adam Knocke, Tony Nankervis, Lindsay Oestritter, Sue Scobie, Ryozo Shibata, Fergus Stewart and Roslyn Vedrines.
