ANDREW Barr is celebrating the passage today of the Road Transport (Public Passenger Services) (Taxi Industry Innovation) Amendment Bill 2015, and says the ACT Government is now moving focus to the finer details of the implementation arrangements.

“The ACT Government is focussed on providing an integrated public transport system that is convenient, efficient, affordable and reliable,” Andrew said.

“Legal ridesharing is another way we are providing genuine transport alternatives to Canberrans and the Government is making the transition to this new form of transport as seamless as possible.

“Since the launch of regulated ridesharing in the ACT at the end of October, there have already been thousands of rides provided to passengers across multiple providers.

Shane Rattenbury said that the passage of today’s legislation is an important milestone to ensure the success of these reforms.

“These regulations are a smart response that recognise the changes that are occurring in the industry and I think the Government has responded in a fair and balanced way,” Shane said.

“We have consulted with stakeholders and moved quickly and responsibly to regulate an industry that needed regulation, balancing a whole range of competing interests.

“The ACT is the first jurisdiction in Australia to regulate ridesharing and we hope that other jurisdictions will look to the ACT as an example of innovative reform in this area.

“Full implementation of the reforms is expected to be finalised in early 2016, and will include the direct licensing and accreditation of rideshare drivers and vehicles by the Road Transport Authority.”
