ARTIST Hou Leong, countertenor Tobias Cole and the group Vocal Fry plan to ‘paint’ an ephemeral soundscape, and ‘sing’ a calligraphic expression this weekend.
“FORM and Sound” is the name of their music-art collaboration at 2pm this Saturday September 19 in The Silk Road Gallery, 19 Kennedy Street, Kingston, where you can also see Hou Leong’s paintings, curated by Peter Haynes, until October 4, 7 days, Sun-Tues 10-2, Wed-Sat 10-4.
“MOTHER, Wife and the Complicated Life” is a new Australian musical set to counter the Hollywood version of marriage and motherhood. “HIDDEN” is an exhibition initiated the Rookwood General Cemetery Reserve Trust in Sydney and this year it will run from Friday September 18 to Sunday October 18, and once again carries a major award valued at $10,000. “HIDDEN” aims to demystify the image of cemeteries as being dark or intimidating.
THE next ‘Salt Room’ event, which is coming up this Friday, September 18, showcases a diverse range of performers and poets, offering audiences a unique insight into what poetry can be, and the possibilities of poetry performance. The session feature performances by Amanda Stewart (Sydney), Paul Magee (Canberra) and Zoe Anderson (Canberra) with the electro-acoustic music of Happy Axe (Canberra). CANBERRA bassoonist David Whitbread’s second solo bassoon recital will help ‘Save the Bassoon’, an international campaign which started at the Holland Festival this year. With backing tapes from rock bands, jazz combos, solo pianists and guitarists, swing bands and full orchestras it will be “exhausting but rewarding,” Whitbread predicts. “THE Metaphysics of Space: Painting a Body of Light” is the exhibition of works resulting from the research of artist Ella Whateley, runs from September 17-26 at the School of Art Gallery, ANU with the opening reception tomorrow Friday Sept 18 at 6pm. “WONDER & Loss”, a springtime show of contemporary Australian ceramics by Cathy Franzi, is at Karen O’Clery’s Narek Galleries, 1140 Tathra-Bermagui Rd TANJA. Franzi, a ceramic artist working and living in Canberra, was this year awarded a PhD in the Ceramics workshop at the ANU School of Art where she has been investigating ways in which representations of Australian flora on the ceramic vessel. “DISTANT VOICES” is an exhibition combining the works of two artists and close friends, Roger Beale and Grahame Crocket, opening tonight at 6pm in M16 Artspace, Blaxland Crs Griffith. Beale is known to many Australians as a senior public servant who is now chair of the ACT Electoral Commission and a member of an advisory board to the Chinese Premier and Crocket was Chief Architect (Heritage and Environment) for the Commonwealth.
ALSO AT M16 are “Synthesized Fragility” by Eleanor Evans, and “Waxing, Waning,” in which Lucy Chetcuti explores the cultural, spiritual and emotional relationships between people and the moon. All exhibition run until October 4 at M16.
