IN honour of NAIDOC week, Belconnen Arts Centre has today announced “taLKbLaK RADIO on Friday”.
PART of a larger vision, “Detour: North West Uncut”, this project aims at working with Indigenous and non-Indigenous rappers to make new music, uncover new stories and find hidden talents by bringing artists together to develop a radio program of interviews and hip hop music with Indigenous Emcee, Michael ‘Wizz’ Weir from Stik n Move.
Weir has a Deadly Award under his belt and says, “It’s a great environment to vibe and spit bars. We’re building to a live performance, tightening up our craft and giving handy advice about taking the next step into the music industry.”
Priya Chandra, producer of the program and youth and community development worker with Ted Noffs The Street University (Canberra) and Multicultural Youth Service says, “Hip Hop Culture is not only a positive cultural movement reflecting community, love, peace, advocacy, equality and acceptance of all people, it’s also a way of life.”
Other collaborator in the venture the Regional Arts Fund, ACT Government and the National Film and Sound Archive, who will offer time with their staff and in their studios.
There are still a few spaces available for young people wanting get involved in sessions at at Belconnen Arts Centre from 5:30 -8:30pm on Friday Nights until July 31, as well as additional one on mentoring sessions throughout August for those keen on participating in a performance in September.
