DOUBLE demerit penalties for the long weekend will come into place from the start of Friday until the end of Monday.
The penalties apply to all speeding and seatbelt offences, with one extra demerit point applicable for all other driving offences.
Police will be targeting dangerous driving, which includes drivers who are speeding, distracted, not wearing seatbelts, disobeying road rules and driving fatigued, drunk or impaired by drug use.
During the Queen’s Birthday long weekend last year, ACT police issued 106 Traffic Infringement Notices and conducted 1095 random breath tests with 10 people caught over the limit. While no road deaths or serious injuries occurred across the region, there were 13 motor vehicle collisions.
