THERE’S no band in the world as wonderfully nerdy as They Might Be Giants.
No wonder then that the first thing I thought of watching the throngs rushing around Questacon’s Adults Only Science Night was from their song “Man, It’s So Loud in Here”:
Everyone’s excited and confused
It should shock no-one that the crowd who choose to spend Friday night in a science museum trended to the nerdy. Having said that nerdy is pretty chic these days.
Everywhere there were long queues (for tickets, for drinks, to get in to see the headline presentations), but they moved pretty quickly.
Having said that it’s a big museum, so we never had to wait long to have a play with the hands on exhibits.
We lined up 25 minutes early to hear a presentation on “why dating is hard” but such was the popularity of that topic we missed out on a seat.
A bit like a science fiction convention the best way to get a seat for a popular talk is to sit through an unpopular one beforehand.
A horrifying presentation on the strange genitals of the animal kingdom did at least give me a useful anecdote to throw around in the pub about barnacle’s bits.
Socially awkward readers should note there were a lot of single men and women wandering around and the museum provides virtually limitless icebreakers (just make sure you ask your intended how it works rather than launching in to telling them).
It’s a fun night with a great crowd. Highly recommended.
