ACT Policing issued 36 infringement notices for seatbelt offences during March after a targeted operation as part of its ongoing traffic enforcement campaign.
During March, 16 drivers received Traffic Infringement Notices (TIN) and 18 drivers received Cautions for not wearing their seatbelts. Two drivers were caught with passengers not wearing their seatbelts. The drivers issued with TINs faced a hefty fine of $374 and three demerit points.
Officer in Charge Traffic Operations Station Sergeant Susan Ball said that the results were down on previous years, showing drivers were getting the message that seatbelts saved lives.
“We’re pleased that the number of people not wearing their seatbelts is down. In particular, we’re really pleased to see that kids are buckling up and no one was caught driving with children not wearing seatbelt.”
“While the numbers are down, it’s always disappointing to see irresponsible people risking their lives by driving without a seatbelt. Seatbelts are a proven safety feature and there’s really no excuse for not wearing one,” Station Sergeant Ball said.
ACT Policing will now focus on targeting Traffic Controls throughout the month of April. This includes offences such as running red lights, not stopping at stop signs and failing to give way.
Drivers who are caught failing to obey traffic controls face hefty fines. Fines for different Traffic Control offences range from a minimum of $215 and the loss of two demerit points to $360 and the loss of three demerit points for each offence.
