SMITH’S Alternative Bookshop has the Tinderbox Spark duo from Brisbane performing their first interstate show on January 15, who promise songs and banter.

Vocalist Lauren and guitarist Bell both have music degrees from the Queensland Conservatorium, and now each makes a living by teaching.

As artist their hope has been to make vocal jazz music that isn’t standard, and doesn’t sound like anyone else, so the pair set about creating open yet accessible compositions.

Together with other musicians who former the broader group, the Tinderbox Spark, they’ve just recorded their first album at the Applewood Lane Studios, west of Brisbane. This album explores vocal jazz in a live recording setting, and captures the natural space of Applewood’s converted church soundscape. It is available from iTunes, Bandcamp or direct from thetinderboxspark.com

The Tinderbox Spark, at Smith’s Alternative Bookshop, 76 Alinga Street, Melbourne Building, Civic, 8pm, January 15, tickets at the door $15/10.
