SHANE Rattenbury has opened the Canberra City Farm sustainable living exhibit in Turner.

“The sustainable living exhibit created by Canberra City Farm provides locals with a great demonstration on how they can incorporate environmentally sustainable practices in their own garden, whether they have a big backyard or small courtyard,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“The exhibit features raised and ground-level garden beds, planter boxes and an energy efficiency structure, and demonstrates techniques including soil improvement, natural food farming methods, seed propagation as well as best practice water and energy management.

“Canberrans may recognise the exhibit from Floriade last year where it made its debut. It has been recreated on this site to continue to inspire and support the implementation of sustainable living in the home.

“The exhibit, however, is not just a display, but includes facilities to grow plants for other Canberra City Farm activities and provides a site for community workshops which will be held to educate people on the techniques adopted to create and maintain the exhibit.

“Growing food locally in this way provides benefits in building community health and wellbeing, including opportunities for people to be active, develop social connections and increase their awareness about local food security and healthy eating options.

“To get involved in the Canberra City Farm, come along to an open day on Sunday 16 November 2014 where you can hear from sustainable garden experts, make new connections with local and regional food producers and lend a helping hand in maintaining the Turner sustainable living exhibit. The open day will be on from 11 am to 3 pm,” Mr Rattenbury concluded.

The Canberra City Farm is a local not-for-profit incorporated volunteer group interested in socially and environmentally responsible food production and sustainable cities.
