ACT Policing caught 873 drivers speeding during July, just half-way through its joint ACT Government campaign asking Canberrans to ‘Stop pushing the limits’.
Of the 873 drivers caught speeding, 582 were issued with a Traffic Infringement Notice (TIN) and 291 drivers were issued with a formal caution.
Whilst half of those drivers caught speeding were driving at between 15km/h and 30km/h over the speed limit, 10 were caught speeding more than 45km/h over the speed limit. One in five of drivers were caught speeding in a school zone to which a 40km/h speed limit applies.
Acting Officer in Charge Traffic Operations, Sergeant Craig McPherson said the results were disappointing.
“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility – drivers who speed are gambling with their lives and the lives of others. Speeding is a choice and drivers can just as easily choose to slow down and save lives,” Sergeant McPherson said.
“We’re continuing to target speeding throughout August and you can do your part by watching for speed signs and slowing down.”
Motorists caught speeding face fines ranging from $203 and one demerit point to more than $1,811 and six demerit points.
The ‘Stop pushing the limits’ campaign forms part of the ACT’s multi-agency road safety strategy and aims to encourage attitudinal and behavioural change towards speeding. The campaign launched on 1 July and will continue throughout August 2014.
