ACT Policing arrested a 53-year-old Theodore man following two instances of drunk driving on Saturday night (June 7).

About 10.15pm, ACT Policing detected a Kawasaki Vulcan motorcycle travelling at 173km/h in a 100km/h zone on the Monaro Highway. Police conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle then underwent roadside breath screening and returned a positive result. The driver was then conveyed to Woden Police Station and underwent a breath analysis, which returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.112.

The 53-year-old Theodore man was issued with an Immediate Suspension Notice.

About 11.40pm that same night, ACT Policing observed the driver riding the same motorcycle and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle on the Monaro Highway near Canberra Avenue.

The driver of the vehicle then underwent roadside breath screening and returned a positive result. The driver was then conveyed to City Police Station and underwent a breath analysis, returning a blood alcohol reading of 0.087.

The male was arrested and lodged in the ACT Watch House, charged in relation to drunk driving, dangerous driving, speeding and driving with a suspension notice in effect.

The man will face the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date.

Traffic Operations Station Sergeant Rod said that the driver showed total disregard for the safety of other road users.

“This kind of behaviour is absolutely stupid, not only was the driver impaired by alcohol, he was travelling at a very dangerous speed. The Canberra community and police simply won’t tolerate this kind of dangerous behaviour on our roads,” Sergeant Anderson said.

“Impaired drivers pose the highest risk on our roads and are over represented in serious injury and fatal collisions. Drivers should know by now not to drink and drive.”
