THE Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council supports the decision by Australian health ministers to have more nurses and midwives – including nurse practitioners and eligible midwives – prescribe medicines within their scope of practice.
“Australia’s health system is among the best in the world, but needs to be prepared for future challenges so Australians get the health-care services they need, when they need them,” says ANMAC’s CEO Amanda Adrian.
“One solution is to have more health professionals prescribe medicines, consistently and safely.”
The Health Professionals Prescribing Pathway Project, an initiative of Health Workforce Australia, will provide more access and improved outcomes for patients, in all parts of the country.
“The most important message resulting from the new pathway is about supporting care,’’ says Ms Adrian.
‘There is considerable evidence that our healthcare system is under pressure. It therefore makes sense that competent, highly educated and experienced health professionals should be able to prescribe medicines, as long as they do so consistently and safely.”
