Lego Queen and other arts around Canberra this long weekend

THE Museum of Australian democracy in old Parliament house is celebrating the Queen’s Birthday public holiday with a day of ‘royal’ activities.

Using over 92,000 LEGO® bricks, a 3m x 2m mosaic of Queen Elizabeth II will be created in in King’s Hall. You can also admire replica crown jewels and there are lots of other activities for both kids and grown-ups. Free entry all weekend, from June 7–9, 9 to 5.


CANBERRA director Daniel McCusker’s production of “Party,” by Tom Basden, is still running on June 6, 7 and 8 at Smith’s Alternative. It’s a comedy that tackles the big issues – China, climate change, and how to run a political party. Bookings to trybooking.com/86004


“IT’S Dark Outside” has been created for the Perth Theatre Company, and runs at at The Street Theatre, 7:30pm June 45-7, with a matinee at 4pm on Sunday June 8. The play uses voice, screen, puppetry and physical theatre and conjure up the mind of an old man in the context of an ‘epic’ Western. Bookings to 6247 1223 or thestreet.org.au

THE new, beefed up ‘Silver Screenings’ Film Season at the National Film and Sound Archive is taking off this Friday, June 6, with screenings of films for people of ‘un certain age’ at 2 PM and 8 PM and thence Friday afternoon screenings through winter and spring.

The season is sponsored by the Community Services Directorate, the IRT Group, and the ACT Health Services Commissioner with responsibilities for services to older people and the Public Trustee for the ACT. First off at 2pm is “The Face of Love,” then at 7.30pm is “Good ‘Ol Frieda,” 64-something Liverpool legal secretary Frieda 64-something Liverpool legal secretary Frieda Kelly tells stories of when loved going down to The Cavern to see the Mersey beat bands. PIANIST Andrew Rumsey joins popular instrumentalists and Canberra soprano Louise Page in the “Rumsey & Friends’ series with Beethoven, Debussy, and Bartok, Villa-Lobos, Schubert, Edwards, Chopin and original poetry read by Fiona Nelson. “SHALLOW Space” is a solo exhibition by Brisbane-based artist Simon Degroot exploring space and construction in the act of abstract painting. At ANCA Gallery, 1 Rosevear St Dickson, until June 22, 12pm-5pm, Wednesday-Sunday.


“ELIOTH Gruner: the texture of light,” the blockbuster survey exhibition of landscapes at the Canberra Museum and Gallery is still up until Sunday, June 22. Look out for his evocations of the Canberra region: Yass, the Cooma-Monaro and the Murrumbidgee River valley.

THE Corps of Staff Cadets and the Band of the Royal Military College will present the “Trooping the Colour” spectacle at Gallipoli Reach, Rond Terrace, Lake Burley Griffin, at 10.15am on Saturday, June 7. Free, all welcome, but bring a chair and a blanket.


EMMA Gibson’s latest script, ‘Grief-Eater”, will be workshopped in ‘First Seen’ at The Street Theatre, at 3pm Sunday June 8, bookings to 6247 1223. It’s a postmodern take on grief with a hint of Greek tragedy.

“ATUA: Sacred gods from Polynesia,” at the National Gallery of Australia, daily until August 3. The exhibition explores the relationship between atua and art, between spirits and sculpture, between gods and priests, between women and men. It looks at some of the most unique works of art in the Polynesian world and tries to make sense of an enduring mystery surrounding religious objects and their association with belief in gods.AT 25 Lonsdale Street Braddon this weekend, a new ‘secret’ studio/gallery space is popping up. The micro-gallery, created by The Lost and Found Office, will showcase ‘The Q Collection’ – some of the diverse work created by members of the Queanbeyan region’s underground arts community– Ben Chapman and Bobby Cerini, Alicia Kane, Ric Bennett, Dennis Mortimer, and Ying Xhang.


TUGGERANONG Arts Centre’s Tuggeranong Rotary Youth Art Award and Exhibition will be on show at the centre’s Gallery 2 until June 30, along with “Everything and Nothing,” a collection of two-dimensional and three-dimensional canvas forms by local artist

THREE exhibitions open at Photo Access today, Thursday, June 5 at 6pm. In the Multimedia Gallery, Danny Wild shows “Thought Cues”, an interactive installation that us microcomputers to control audio, video, found and constructed objects in a comment on the dissociation of urban life. Christine Rufflet’s “Circus Dreams” brings together photographs from a real Circus in France and others from “Le Musée du Cirque et de l’Illusion”, as well as lights and objects. Sally-Forth Heaney-Garzoli’s “Shifted: scapes and figures” explores the way landscapes and figures are subtly transformed or shifted, by their relationship to one another. Exhibitions continue until Sunday, June 29 in in the Manuka Arts Centre, Corner Manuka Circle and New South Wales Crescent, Griffith. Opening hours Tuesday to Friday 10am to 4pm and weekends 12noon to 4pm.

SNAKES in the laundry, dreary meals of mutton and a British reluctance to shower are just some of the memories post-war immigrants have shared in “A Place to Call Home? Migrant hostel memories” – now on show at the National Archives of Australia, Queen Victoria Terrace, Parkes.


ANNE Zahalka, one of Australia’s leading photomedia artists, was commissioned by the Department of Parliamentary Services to document the many facets of Parliament House and the people who occupied it during its 25th anniversary year. An exhibition of the results are shown in 20 images on display in at the Presiding Officers Exhibition Area Level 1, House of Representatives side, Parliament House, 9am – 5pm daily. All welcome.


THE National Film and Sound Archive has a film season in association with Canberra Museum and Gallery called “The Textures of Light: Pastoral Visions of Australian Cinema, with “The Squatter’s Daughter” (1933), “The Sundowners,” (1960) “The Year My Voice Broke” are still to go.
