DOUBLE demerit points will apply for speeding and seatbelt offences in the ACT from this Friday (December 20) up to and including New Year’s Day.
One extra demerit point will be applied on top of the usual number for other offences, such as running red lights, failing to stop at stop signs or using a mobile phone while driving, according to Attorney-General Simon Corbell, who said police would be targeting speeding in the ACT.
Drivers who fail to wear their seatbelt or allow children to travel in a vehicle without a seatbelt or child restraint will receive six demerit points, and so will drivers who exceed the speed limit by more than 15 km/h, but less than 30 km/h.
Anyone caught going over the speed limit by 45 km/h or more will lose their license immediately, as 12 demerit points will be applied.
“Drive safely so that you survive to greet and enjoy the New Year,” Mr Corbell said.
“Road safety is always important but, at times such as this, when many more people are on the road, we should pay extra attention to driving safely. Don’t let fatigue or reckless driving ruin the festive season for yourself or others.
“People travelling interstate should take advantage of the many rest stops along the national highways or the ‘Driver Reviver’ sites in the southeast region of NSW where refreshments are available. A tired driver becomes a dangerous driver so stay awake, stay alert, stay safe.”
