THOSE ‘warped and twisted’ members of the Canberra Spinners and Weavers have to their annual member’s exhibition and sale at The Q, Queanbeyan Performing Arts Centre, until May 24. This year the Raffle Prize is a hand woven wrap by Pam McDougall. The warp is wool, cashmere and knit silk ribbon; the weft is bands of hand spun tussah silk and fine commercially spun tussah.

THERE’LL be two FREE traditional Javanese dance performances by dancers from the Yogyakarta Palace to match the Indonesian photography exhibition, “Gardens of the East” at the James O Fairfax Theatre, NGA, 1.30 pm to 2.30pm and 3.30pm to 4.30 pm, this Sunday May 18.

DOMENIC Mico from Smith’s Alternative in Canberra will be opening “Immersione – The Assisi Project”, new paintings by Barbara Nell, at the South Hill Gallery, 3 Garroorigang Rd Goulburn, this Saturday at 2pm. Created as a result of an art residency in Italy, it represents a new direction for the artist, so “expect to be surprised” gallery director Linda Gumbert says. The show runs until May 24.

GOOD news from MOAD and Craft ACT that “BEYOND the Veneer: a fresh look at the Prime Minister’s Suite” has been extended to July 7 at Old Parliament House. Patsy Hely, Kirstie Rea, Gilbert Riedelbauch, Dianne Firth and USA artist Russell Baldon have each been allocated rooms from the Prime Minister’s Suite to inspire an artistic response. PAINTINGS by Amanda Davies (TAS) and Mark Rose (VIC) and photographs by Sarah Galletta (VIC) and Emidio Puglielli (VIC) are showing at ANCA Gallery, 1 Rosevear Place Dickson ACT, noon -5pm Wednesday-Sunday. THE 2014 Biennial National Children’s Book Council of Australia Conference is being held at the Rex Hotel in Canberra from May 16 to 18, with speakers including. Bronwyn Bancroft, Dianne Wolfer, Steven Herrick, Robert Ingpen, Naadia Wheatley, Mark Macleod, Andy Griffiths and Children’s laureate – Canberra’s own Jackie French. This year’s theme is “Discovering National Treasures”. A highlight will be the Saturday evening dinner at the AWM and French and Morris Gleitzman will both speak on the topic of their recently released works on World War I.
