DANCE Week is now in full swing, but for members of the general public the highlight is probably the visit of the Imperial Russian Ballet Company, and there’s still time to get seats.

Tonight and tomorrow night the company will be performing the ballet version of  “Don Quixote,” that quintessentially Spanish tale taken from Cervantes’ book of the same name about the elderly nobleman from La Mancha  who tilts at windmills and wanders the countryside in search of heroic deeds.

Accompanied by his faithful retainer Sancho Panza and a donkey, the Don takes as his muse the lady Dulcinea, in reality a simple peasant woman. It’s an ageless, optimistic tale about the triumph of the human imagination.

The Imperial Russian Ballet Company was formed in 1994 by the Bolshoi Theatre soloist, Gediminas Taranda and these days when in Moscow his troupe performs at what is now the Kolobov Novaya Opera Theatre.

“Don Quixote,” the Imperial Russian Ballet Company, at the Canberra Theatre, 7.30pm tonight and tomorrow May 5 and 6, bookings to  6275 2700 or canberratheatrecentre.com.au
