Bad boys and other artists: weekend arts

THOSE bad boys of local music, George Huitker & Junk Sculpture,  tell us that “the time has come” to celebrate one of their favourite bands.

LOCAL tenor Nikolai Morozow is a member of the Australian Diocese Choir of the Russian Orthodox Church, which is representing Australia in an Orthodox choral music festival in Poland in May of this year. The choir is an ensemble of choristers from various Russian Orthodox choirs around Australia and a fundraising concert will be held this  Sunday, May 4, at 3pm at the Church of St Andrew, cnr Canberra Avenue and State Circle. Tickets at the door.


SYDNEY’S Elektra Ensemble will perform “Reflections on Life, Death and Transience,” European wartime commemorations,  at St John’s Anglican Church, Reid  at 3pm on Sunday, May 4, tickets at the door.


CANBERRA REP wardrobe has reached bursting point again, so they’re holding a sale and say, “you never know what you may find.” At the stage door of Theatre 3, Ellery Crescent Acton, May 2, 11am to 2pm and May 3, 11am to 3pm.


NINE of Australia’s best potters, Barbara Campbell-Allen, Rowley Drysdale, Su Hanna, Steve Harrison, Neil Hoffmann, Peter Pilven, Owen Rye, Steve Williams and Kirk Winter,  are exhibiting at Ivy Hill Gallery, 1795 Bermagui – Tathra Road Wapengo, 10 AM to 5 PM, Friday to Monday  from now until  June 9.


PAINTINGS now on show at The Q Exhibition Space (rear of 253 Crawford St Queanbeyan) until May 10  offer a view into a world of the meditation practice OF Falun Gong (Falun Dafa).

AN exhibition of works by local painter Jenny Shepherd and sculptor John Murphy will be open this Saturday, May 3 at 4 PM by Gai Brodtmann, member for Canberra, at Canberra Grammar School Gallery, Monaro Crescent, Red Hill, when the gallery will be open for viewing from 1pm.  The exhibition runs until May 24.


AUSSIE blues and roots artist Owen Campbell is touring the east coast of Australia to promote the second single, “Remember to Breathe”  of his debut album ‘The Pilgrim’. SCULPTORS Dierdre Pearce and Isobel Rayson have a show running at at Canberra Contemporary Art Space Manuka , May 11, Wednesday to Sunday 11am to 5pm. In “Rinse & Repeat” they explore mark-making as a means to record their presence in the world, presenting a series of tools alongside corresponding drawings and photographs. The opening is at 6 PM today Thursday, May 1, all welcome.

GRIFFITH’S Party is an annual event that brings together the community and highlights the strengths of local arts, schools, organisations and businesses. It’s running on Saturday, May 3 from 12.30 – 4pm, centring on M16 Artspace, 21 Blaxland Cres, Griffith and nearby Blaxland Park. The M16 building will be transformed into a ‘garden’ with a pop up sculpture exhibition.  In the galleries there will be 3 exhibitions of photography, drawing and painting by local artists and the  hidden spaces of M16 Artspace will be open to the public.


MICHELLE Day is holding an Open Studio this  Saturday May 3 from noon to  4pm at  Studio 14 – M16. This coincides with Griffith’s Party. Day is moving studios, so is offering her work more affordably.

SALUT! Baroque is presenting “From Allegri to Albinoni” on Friday May 2 at 7.30pm in  Albert Hall. Using the metaphor of fashion, Salut! Tell us that A philosophy of “new clothes from old cloth” saw new musical garb still branded as Canzona, Cantata, Concerto and Sonata. The musicians are Sally Melhuish, Recorder Hans-Dieter Michatz, Recorder Jane Downer, Baroque Oboe Anna McMichael, Baroque Violin Bianca Muggleton, Baroque Violin Valmai Coggins, Baroque Viola Tara Hashambhoy, Baroque Viola Tim Blomfield,   Baroque Cello and Monika Kornel, Harpsichord. Curator and executive producer, Melissa Juhanson from the SAFC, will be at the National Film and Sound Archive this Friday, May 2, 5.30-6.30pm, to discuss the SAFC’s legacy of films, also marked in the archive’s current exhibition celebrating the SAFC’s 40th Anniversary. CHRISSIE Shaw and Alan Hicks reprise their show, “Bijou, a Cabaret of secrets and seduction,” a selection of French and German songs and piano music from 1870 to the 1930s as  part of the intriguing story of Madame Bijou, a much faded beauty of the Belle Epoque  inhabiting the bars of Paris to tell fortunes and saucy tales in exchange for a crust to eat and a glass of wine. BRETT Stone, as a  manager of Olsen Irwin Gallery in Sydney, has encouraged the blossoming of many emerging artist’s careers, and helped build many private collections. Iconic architect Ken Woolley’s drawings of squares and streetscapes focus on older buildings – properties patinated with age and often enriched with unfamiliar architectural detailing. An exhibition of works by both artists will feature in “New Useful Bowls” and “Views from Hotel Windows in Paris, Moscow and Ravello” opens at 2pm on Saturday May 3 South Hill Gallery 3 Garroorigang Rd Goulburn. Continues until May 11.

STRATHNAIRN Arts is presenting an exhibition of works by 10 artists made at the Strathnairn Foundry, the only public access metal casting facility in Australia. This Saturday,  May 3 at 4 pm, Canberra artist Peter Latona will open the exhibition, which  will feature bronze and ceramic sculpture and a selection of life drawings by Cameron Chamberlain, Margaret Gordon, Amanda Parker, Jahna Knyvett, Anne Hodgett, Jim Sullivan, Peter King, Itzell Tazzyman, Beredina de Ruiter, Ingrid Ferguson and Latona. “Nude Fugue,” at Strathnairn, Stockill Drive Holt, until May 18.
