MANNING Clark House has snared Bob Carr for on May 8, where he will discuss his new book with Andrew Clark from the “Financial Review.”
You’ll have to be quick to book, as Carr’s talks have been sellouts everywhere.
The former Australian Foreign Minister’s controversial book, “Diary of a Foreign Minister,” compiled from notes kept over an 18 month period, is in effect an expose of Australia’s diplomatic efforts.
Topics on the agenda for the night will include debate within the Gillard government on the status of Palestine and how former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was perceived in China.
As Foreign Minister he worked to build stronger relationships with ASEAN and to restore global diplomatic relations with Myanmar following the government’s release of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. He campaigned for the passage of a global Arms Trade Treaty and led the final stages of Australia’s successful bid for a seat on the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member. His plan for a Syrian medical pact was backed by the G20. He was also extremely active in supporting Australia’s relationship with Indonesia.
He retired from the Senate in October 2013 and has taken up a Professorial Fellowship with the Sydney Southeast Asia Centre at the University of Sydney.
