LIKE far too many arts organisations in Canberra, the Australian National Eisteddfod Society faces challenges, especially around funding and volunteer recruitment.

Loyal supporters say it would be an enormous concern to the Canberra community if the society did not fully fulfil its essential function. Now those enthusiasts in the Bands & Orchestras Division of the society are hosting a Trivia Night at the Lyneham High School Performing Arts Centre this Saturday to help raise funds for the running of this year’s Eisteddfod.
A new board elected last March, with Sylvia Tulloch, scientist, business woman, and arts philanthropist, as president, has brought renewed energy and determination to the society as it faces the future. Ms Tulloch has had a long association with the Society, including as a major sponsor of the Aria competition.
“In recent years”, Ms Tulloch says, “the society has not been in the position to stage some elements of its traditional competitions, including, particularly, the Aria competition.” But, she continued, “the society has been fortunate to recruit a noted Canberra singer, Fleur Millar, to convene a new nation wide Aria, which will be implemented at the 2015 Eisteddfod”.
The Australian National Eisteddfod was first held in Canberra in 1938. Over the past 76 years the organisation has grown to offer a wide variety of performing arts opportunities in Bands, Orchestras, Instrumental, Choirs, Singing, Piano, Speech and Drama. It actively fosters the growth of confidence and self-esteem in performers of all levels and ages, especially among children and young adults.
