CANBERRA’S Ecumenical Cantata Choir is made up of 35 voices drawn from about 13 churches across the Protestant and Catholic denominations.
The choir decided to help St Andrew’s Anglican Church in Braidwood with the project to restore its priceless pipe organ by performing “The Sound of Singing” by John W Peterson at Weston Creek Uniting Church this Saturday, April 12 at 2:30pm. Admission is by donation and all proceeds go to St Andrew’s Organ Restoration Fund.
CANBERRA Rep is staging a “Shakespeare as Director” workshop this weekend on April 12, from 10 AM to 12 noon at Theatre 3, Repertory Lane, Acton. Shakespeare’s texts, they say, are full of hidden directions for the actors and clues as to how to play particular scenes. Entry is free.
CRAFT ACT is hosting a bumper open day event for its artists-in-residence, Annee Miron and Sally Blake, on April 12, with a special bus taking visitors to both parks to view the artists’ works in progress and hear from them about their practice while also soaking in the surrounds of the national parks. It’ll take in both the homesteads where they are working on; Gudgenby Ready-Cut Cottage at Namadgi, and Nil Desperandum Homestead at Tidbinbilla, on the endangered ecological habitat of Bogs and Fens. AS if that weren’t enough, two exhibitions running at Craft ACT: Craft and Design Centre in the North Building until May 17 tackle big issues through the mediums of ceramics, and mixed media. The innovative “White Heat: Contemporary Australian ceramic jewellery,” is curated by Zara Collins and Helen Johnson, while “Prospect,” a solo exhibition from Craft ACT member, Antonia Aitken, explores the environmental impact of mining on the site of Queenstown in Tasmania.
AUSDANCE ACT is keen to get a few more performers for its Dance Week Displays at Belconnen Fresh Food Markets on May 3 and 10. IN two new exhibitions at Beaver Galleries, painter, printmaker and sculptor, Graham Fransella, explores figure and landscape in paintings and works on paper, while Israeli-born ceramicist, Avital Sheffer, has been inspired by her investigation into her Middle Eastern and Jewish heritage. QUEANBEYAN Museum Curator Gillian Kelly says “It is amazing how early the postal service began in Queanbeyan. 1836 was two years before the town’s proclamation in 1838.” An exhibition, “Post Haste,” marking this phenomenon, opens this Saturday, April 12 at 12:30 PM in the Museum, 10 Farrer Place Queanbeyan. The exhibition is open Saturdays and Sundays from 1- 4 PM but is closed over Easter.
THE National Film and Sound Archive is commencing a series of public conversations to explore its Anzac collection. The NFSA has an extensive collection of items relating to Australia’s experiences during the First World War, including films, sound recordings, photographs, glass slides and equipment and this Thursday, April 10, from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM in the Theatrette, senior curators of Film, Sound and Indigenous collections will review and highlight some of the interesting pieces. One highlight will be examples of cartoonist Harry Julius’s “Cartoons of the Moment” with live accompaniment by pianist Elaine Loebenstein. Free entry. Bookings to 6248 2000
GALLERY@BCS is staging a multimedia collection of artworks by young Canberrans in celebration of Youth Week. It’s the result of a new initiative encouraging young people aged 12-25 to exhibit their artwork in public places in Canberra, including cafés, restaurants, waiting rooms and libraries. “Youth Art goes Public”, Belconnen Community Centre, Swanson Court, Belconnen, until April 16, 9am-4:30pm Monday-Friday.
“PORTRAIT of a Nation: Unmade Edges”, showing at Belconnen Arts Centre, was a project supporting artists in Uriarra, Tharwa, Hall, Pialligo, Stromlo Settlement and Oaks Estate, ‘villages’ in Canberra. Artists Rachel Bowak, Marily Cintra, Malcolm Cooke, Hanna Hoyne, Sui Jackson, Dan Maginnity, Kevin Miller, Heike Qualitz, John Reid, Michel Starling, Dan Stewart-Moore, Amanda Stuart, Marzena Wasikowska and Carolyn Young created works that were inspired by, and in turn, inspired the communities.
