CANBERRANS planning to build will have the chance to look up the licence history of their prospective builders after new laws passed the Legislative Assembly today.
Planning Minister Simon Corbell welcomed the passage of the Construction and Energy Efficiency Legislation Amendment Bill.
“The legislation creates a public register of licence information that will be published and updated weekly on the construction regulator’s website,” Simon said.
“Information will include conditions, suspensions, cancellations and other disciplinary actions that may apply to a licensee. These amendments are supported by feedback from extensive public and industry consultation on building quality and the review of the Building Act.
“New laws will improve consumer protection and help level the playing field for construction practitioners doing the right thing.
“The existing databases holding licensee information will be modified to establish the public register over the next few months.”
