CANBERRA’S own Christmas Carnival in the City kicked off today for the second year running, with free rock climbing, rides and twice as many camels as last year.

DSCN0032The 12-day family event starts runs from 12-8pm each day from now until December 23 and includes free rides like bumper boats, an obstacle course and giant inflatable “water balls” designed for a person to climb inside.

The amical animals were brought up from Victoria by camel rangler Peter Hodge, his daughter Amanda and employees. Mr Hodge has been working with camels for over 30 years, and started out catching them in Central Australia, where they have run free since being introduced to Australia, mainly from India, in the 1800s.

Chair of the Canberra CBD Limited board, Emmanuel Notaras, said the company had significantly increased the amount of funding for this year’s Christmas Carnival and was committed to spending money on running the event well into the future, to encourage Canberrans to enjoy the reviatalised city centre for reasons other than shopping.

Mr Notaras attended the launch today with Canberra CBD Ltd CEO Jane Easthope, who said she was not appropriately dressed to go for a ride.

“I have been thrilled about this, I can’t wait to kick off the festive season with this fantastic carnival,” Ms Easthope said.

“Our main goal is to bring people to the City and spread the festive spirit in the days before Christmas. It is a great opportunity for families to spend some time together while having fun with all the free activities.

“There will be a musical offering daily and the team from “You Are Here” have put together a great Christmas themed program to provide entertainment for those visiting the carnival.”
