A part of National Youth Week 2014, the workshops are intended to provide young people (aged 12 to 25 years) with the opportunity to explore the many different aspects of self-publishing, from poetry slams and blogging, comics, fan fiction and podcasting.

Curated by 22-year-old local writer Chiara Grassia, the afternoon embraces the theme “Our Voice: Our Impact.”

According to Grassia, “ ‘Write On’ is a great way for young people to muster up the courage to jump in and get involved in Canberra’s strong literary scene. The aim of ‘Write On’ is to give young writers and creators a space to try out something new, create work without pressure and use their individual voice to find ways of publishing their own work in a medium that suits them.”

Examples of workshops are guides to writing fanfiction by Zoya Patel and crafting and performing a piece of narrative performance poetry with Raphael Kabo and Zoë Anderson.

Local writers’ collective, Scissors Paper Pen, will deliver their “Serious Series”, three workshops sharing everything they know about setting yourself up as a writer in an area that you love, and the afternoon will also feature the Canberra Zine Emporium’s (CZE) Zine Vending Machine, a DIY installation.

“Don’t forget to bring your paper and pen,” they’re saying.

Ainslie and Gorman Arts Centres present “Write On”, at Gorman House Arts Centre, noon to 4pm, Sunday,  April 6. To Bookings are essential writeoncanberra@gmail.com or 6249 7377.
