ONE of Canberra’s best-known digital journalists, John Griffiths, has been appointed editor of citynews.com.au

“CityNews” editor, Ian Meikle, welcomed the appointment saying : “John Griffiths has a masterful understanding of internet publishing , which he applies with professionalism and enormous good humour. I know readers will really enjoy the difference on our website under his leadership.”

Universally known by his “johnboy” handle, Griffiths was the founder of the RiotACT website which he says he started in late 2000 to win an argument with his girlfriend, “only to discover there are worse things in life than losing those sorts of arguments”.

After three years cavorting with Nordic backpackers in the less reputable parts of the world, Griffiths returned to Australia in 1997 and found himself working in the Parliamentary Press Gallery for the internet pioneering Capital Monitor news service.

“Having learnt a valuable, albeit painful and expensive, lesson in the perils of diluting founders’ equity, ending in the liquidation of RiotACT, I’m joining citynews.com.au full of enthusiasm for working with a bigger team,” he says.
