Gilby to shine in Mozart concerto

RENOWNED Canberra violinist, Barbara Jane Gilby, the very first tertiary violin graduate of the Canberra School of Music back in 1975, is one of the stars in the first concert of the Llewellyn Series, ‘Préludes’, to be heard tonight and tomorrow at Llewellyn Hall.

Gilby, who is also the concertmaster of the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, will play Mozart’s demanding “Violin Concerto No 5 – ‘Turkish’,” under the baton of conductor, Tom Woods, currently Chief Conductor of Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.

Mussorgsky’s dramatic 1867 work, “Night on Bald Mountain” will open the evening, a suitable sequel to the orchestra’s recent performance accompanying the outdoor screening of Disney’s “Fantasia”, the work that made the composition famous.

Another highlight of the concert will be “Re-Collecting ASTORoids”, by Sydney composer, Elena Kats-Chernin. It’s a kind of pun on the name of the celebrated Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla.

The final performance of the evening will be Liszt’s tone poem “Les Préludes”, giving the title to the concert.
