MICHAEL Easson will remain as chair of the ACTEW Corporation board for the next three years after acting in the position since July last year, when John Mackay stepped down in the wake of revelations that managing director Mark Sullivan’s salary was under-reported by $234,000 in the company’s 2010-11 annual report.
Wendy Caird, who had been acting deputy chair, was also made permanent yesterday and board member Rachel Peck was welcomed back for a further three years.Easson’s first act was to “welcome” the appointments made by the Legislative Assembly’s bi-partisan Public Accounts Committee, including his own.
“ACTEW has a big agenda ahead for the coming years, and it’s imperative that we approach that work having the number one goal of being the best water utility in the country,” he said last night.
“Achieving our goals will take considerable focus and effort, and provided we act smartly and efficiently, I am confident we have the team, and the direction to continue to deliver safe and efficient water and sewerage services to our customers in and around the Territory.”

Dr Michael Easson AM is the longest serving ACTEW board member, has a Master of Science Degree from the University of Oxford and a PhD from the Australia Defence Force Academy and has served on the boards of some of Australia’s largest infrastructure and property concerns. He is presently executive chairman of EG Property, with $1.25b in funds under management, and chair of technology and documentation business Ridley & Co.
Dr Easson has served as Adjunct Professor of Management at the Australian Graduate School of Management and as vice-president of UNICEF Australia. In 1989 he became the youngest ever secretary of the NSW Labor Council (UnionsNSW), and in 1993 was made vice-president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions as well as senior vice-president of the NSW branch of the Labor Party.
Wendy Caird is a small business owner and former National Secretary of the Community and Public Sector Union.
She also served as vice president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions and an executive member of the NSW Labour Council (UnionsNSW). She represented Australia in the International Labour Organisation, in which she worked on “the provision of quality, affordable water, energy, health and education to the world’s poorest nations”, according to ACTEW.
Ms Caird was first appointed to the ACTEW Board in December 2009 and has been an active participant on various sub-committees involving ACTEW and the joint venture ActewAGL.
Rachel Peck is a trained engineer and the principal of architectural firm peckvonhartel, and has brought her extensive experience in project design, cost control and
project management to the ACTEW board since May, 2011.
