THE ACT Government has come to the rescue of the unlucky Gungahlin Jets Football Club with $40,000 to fix up their team shed, after it suffered two robberies last year and had $70,000 in federal funding cancelled by the Abbott government.

The funds will go towards completing renovation and maintenance works at “The Hangar”, the team’s shed in Amaroo, and to boost security to prevent further burglaries.

Jets chairman Joe Cortese Chairman said today was “a great day for the club”, and added that requests for help were largely ignored by Liberal Senator for the ACT Zed Seselja.

Chief Minister Katy Gallagher said she had been disappointed to see the Jets targeted not once, but twice by thieves in recent times, leaving the team without fundraising materials and with damage to their club house.

“I was also disappointed to see … that the Commonwealth Government had withdrawn funding which was funded before the last election, which would have facilitated expansion of the club shed,” Ms Gallagher said.

“This is a club which deserves a break rather than more hassles and I am pleased to be able to provide $40,000 of ACT Government funds to help the team complete their works and boost security to prevent this type of robbery taking place again.

“I hope that this funding will help to complete these important works and to allow the club to get back to focusing on training and contributing to the local Gungahlin community.”

The club wants to install sliding doors, buy new furniture and add lining to ceilings and walls among other work to improve the shed.

“The Gungahlin Jets is a well respected community group in Canberra’s north with almost 450 people expected to be involved in the 2014 AFL season and the government views this donation of funds an important contribution to a group who help to keep local players active and having fun on the field,” the Chief Minister added.

“This money will also help the team to focus on the beginning of the 2014 local AFL season and hopefully put these incidents behind them.”
