Another Belconnen garbage fire

ACT firefighters are working to extinguish a fire in a rubbish pile in Belconnen.

The fire has been burning at the Belconnen landfill site on Sustainability Road for several hours, the call coming through to firefighters around 1.50pm.

One pumper, two Compressed Air Foam tankers, a water tanker, one breathing apparatus truck, Hazmat and one RFS unit are on site.

Evacuations of the site have commenced.

WorkCover is attending.

Smoke is visible from the large pile of rubbish that is about 15 metres high, 40 metres long and 30 metres wide.

There are no flames after firefighters sprayed water on the pile.

One pumper, three tankers, one compressed air foam tanker, one breathing apparatus unit, the Hazmat unit, two RFS units and a Commander are on site.

The fire in not located in the same area where waste from the Mr Fluffy demolitions is.

Fire crews are awaiting the arrival of machinery to break apart the pile and will remain on site for several hours.

There are no visible signs of smoke or fire coming from the rubbish pile but firefighters will remain on site into the evening.

Crews are continuing to put water on the pile.

Firefighters are working with WorkCover to render the area safe.
