JOY Burch says the ACT Government will conduct a test of the national telephone warning system, ‘EMERGENCY ALERT’, tomorrow, October 28.

“EMERGENCY ALERT is a nationally coordinated telephony based warning system designed to send messages to the landline and mobile telephones in a defined geographic area,” Joy said.

“The system was officially launched six years ago. In the absence of a recent ‘live’ activation of the system for an emergency situation, the ESA will undertake an annual live test of the capability in the community.

“Test messages will be sent to approximately 25,000 people tomorrow afternoon within a defined area in the Black Mountain precinct, an area of particular risk during the fire season.

“The target area of Black Mountain has been selected for the EMERGENCY ALERT test tomorrow to cover high risk premises within the precinct. These premises include the Black Mountain Tower, the Australian National Botanic Gardens, CSIRO, the Australian National University and the Black Mountain School.

“EMERGENCY ALERT provides our emergency services with another option to alert the ACT community to an imminent or immediate threat or emergency situation. This is in addition to existing measures in place in the ACT including real time alerts and warnings through the ESA website and social media accounts, as well as arrangements through local radio and television stations.

“Tomorrow landline phones within the selected test area will receive voice message from the ACT Emergency Services Agency which will clearly state this is a test message only.

“Mobile phones that are within the selected test area will receive a text message which will also highlight it is a test message only. People should be aware, they may receive a test message on mobile phones even if they are outside of the test area.

“People who receive the test EMERGENCY ALERT message will not be required to take any action.”
