DINER en Blanc is the ever-so-stylish and elegant picnic event that started in Paris 25 years ago and, for the second year, is part of our Enlighten Festival.
It has rules that add to the excitement with a secret location only revealed shortly before guests, are transported there laden with the food, wine, tables, chairs and dining accoutrements.
And all guests must wear white. That gives some leeway for interpretation evidenced as the many shades of white swept down the steps to Rond Terrace in a gentle sprinkle of rain and the sounds of popping champagne corks.
That was shortlived as the heavens opened and a rush for the buses by diners began while the organisers wisely decided to shift the event to the Canberra Centre.
In they swept in good humour and with new anticipation of a slightly delayed feast of food and fun in a space that looked quite white and right on the night.
The waving of linen serviettes signified the start of dining, the balloons were left behind but the sparklers sparkled outside and, despite the weather, Diner en Blanc was a success because of the enthusiasm and acceptance of diners to the experience. Enlightened indeed.
