Weekend arts: live improvised drawing

TONIGHT (Friday, December 6) at 6pm, M16 Artspace has the opening of its Drawing Prize Exhibition of Finalists.

The exhibition will feature a performance from the group “Schwa”, who combine improvised drawing with dance and music. The winner gets $1500, and $500 goes to both second and third places. The judges are artist Jim Kuacz and Molonglo Group director Nectar Efkarpidis. As well there’s a celebration of work by Canberra Art Workshop members in M16′s Gallery 03. AFTER playing to sold out crowds in 2009 and 2010, Everyman Theatre is bringing back one of Off-Broadway’s most successful musicals, The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!), featuring the original Canberra cast. The plot combines five musicals, each written in the style of a different composer: Rodgers & Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Kander & Ebb. IMB Sunset Cinema’s “Family Fridays” feature family oriented movies on the Northern Eucalypt Lawn at the National Botanic Gardens. A NEW Australian documentary, “Fallout”, looks at the making of the ‘end of the world’ film “On the Beach” in Melbourne in 1959, and goes behind the Hollywood glamour to look at the book’s author, Neville Shute. “Fallout” screening at Arc Sunday December 8, 2pm Thursday  December 12 , 2pm Saturday  December 14, 4:30pm. “On the Beach” screens at Arc Cinema, Saturday, December 21, at 2pm. TOMORROW (Saturday, December 7), Lifeline Canberra and April’s Caravan are throwing a Merry Old Soul Christmas Party at the vintage clothing store, Hipsley, in Braddon from 10am to 4pm. There’ll be soul records spun by DJ Degg from 10:30am and live music by Fun Machine and Moochers Inc. from noon, with face painting, Santa photos and cocktails. There’ll be 20 per cent off all vintage clothes and proceeds go to training Lifeline Canberra’s telephone crisis support volunteers. At 2/27 Lonsdale Street, Braddon.
