DEPUTY opposition leader and Shadow Minister for Planning and Infrastructure Alistair Coe has described the building industry stimulus package announced today by the ACT Government as an admission that the Labor government has strangled Canberra for years with fees, charges and regulations.

“For years, the Canberra Liberals have raised concerns about the lease variation charge, commence and complete fees and the lack of land for smaller builders,” Mr Coe said in a statement this afternoon. ”Today’s announcement is an acknowledgement that the opposition was right and that the government has gone too far with taxes and regulations.”

“The construction sector should not need a stimulus package; the sector simply needs the certainty and security of a level playing field with a reasonable level of government involvement. In contrast, the Labor/Greens government has heavily intervened in the sector and squeezed businesses and jobs out of the ACT.

“The opposition calls on the government to go further through simplifying the Territory Plan, making more land available for small business builders and to give fair consideration to Canberra businesses for government contracts. Unfortunately, for some businesses, today’s changes will be too little too late.”
