AN open day to promote organic gardening practices and raise funds to assist refugees and asylum seekers in Canberra will be held at the Kambah Community Garden on Saturday, September 26.
The event will showcase the successful use of organic gardening techniques to grow fresh food sustainably in the local Kambah community.
Locally propagated vegetable and herb seedlings will be on sale ready for spring planting. Visitors can get advice and inspiration from local gardeners and from the talks and demonstrations on vital organic gardening processes including composting, soil building and worm farming.
There will be displays of organic vegetable produce; a food stall; and a raffle drawn on the day with great prizes.
The Kambah Community Garden began in 2001 and is one of 12 community gardens operated by the Canberra Organic Growers Society.
Convener Neville Jackson said the garden always welcomes visitors and the open day was a regular event aimed at bringing people from the local community into the garden to learn, be inspired to grow their own food and, if they are interested, participate in the Garden as a volunteer or as a plot-holder.
“Keeping connected to the Canberra community is very important to us,’ Neville said.
“We aim to inspire others by demonstrating organic gardening and sharing information and advice, including through talks to community groups, holding occasional open day events and donating plants to community gardens in underprivileged areas.
“Since 2012 we’ve sponsored asylum-seekers and refugees in organic gardening through our Goodwill Garden program in cooperation with the Australian Red Cross and Companion House. Funds raised at the open day from the sale of plants and vegetarian food will be used to support this program.
The open day will be held from 11am – 4pm, at the corner of Springbett Street and O’Halloran Circuit, behind the Kambah Woolshed.
