SHANE Rattenbury has opened a new horse holding yard which allows riders to make greater use of facilities at the National Arboretum Canberra.
“ACT Equestrian Association approached the Arboretum last year to discuss the possibility of a horse holding yard on the grounds of the Arboretum, given its proximity to the National Equestrian Centre and the number of riders who regularly pass through the area,” Shane said.
“TAMS has since been working with the Equestrian Association to build the new holding yard, which is located amongst the beautiful Buchan Blue acacia species and within walking distance of the Village Centre.
“The yard will allow riders visiting the Arboretum to secure their horses while a fellow rider collects refreshments from the Sprout cafe. This means riders can take a break, relax and enjoy the great surroundings on offer at the Arboretum.
“Canberra is already well known for its great vistas and equestrian opportunities and the new horse yard will make the Arboretum an even more desirable location for riders to enjoy Canberra’s beautiful outdoors.
“Signage has been installed at the yard to give information to riders and pedestrians about horse etiquette, safety and rider obligations. The large holding yard ensures that the horses are kept separate from passing visitors.
“The works have also included the installation of a water trough to keep horses hydrated and a mounting block to help riders get back on their horses with ease.
The project cost approximately $22,000 and was completed with a generous financial contribution of $4,200 from the equestrian community, lead by the ACT Equestrian Association. Christine Lawrence, President of the ACT Equestrian Association, said the new yards are welcomed by the equestrian community.
“It’s been very rewarding to see this project come to fruition as a partnership with the Arboretum. I encourage local horse riders to take advantage of this facility and enjoy the Arboretum and all it has to offer,” Ms Lawrence said.
