Traffic slowed for Melrose students

MOTORISTS will need to slow down on the main road outside Melrose High School during a half-hour period every weekday, starting from next Tuesday, March 11.

A 60km/h speed limit will apply to a section of Athllon Drive outside Melrose High School each school day between 3.00 and 3.30pm, centred around the intersection with Beasley Street.

The timing of traffic lights at the intersection will also be “adjusted to better suit the movements of pedestrians” and give people more time to cross on foot, according to Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Shane Rattenbury, who announced the new safety measures yesterday.

“The changes follow a series of studies conducted by TAMS on the safety of pedestrian crossing arrangements at the intersection of Athllon Drive and Beasley Street, adjacent to the Melrose High School boundary,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“The studies determined that as many as 300 students cross the Athllon Beasley/Melrose intersection during the period between 3:15pm and 3:30pm each school day. This is an exceptional case where a very high number of students cross an 80kmh road within a short period of time.”

Electronic message boards have been placed on Athllon Drive, Beasley Street and Mawson Drive from today until Monday, March 17, to remind motorists and other road users of the change in speed limit.
