‘FORUM theatre’ is a style of interactive play-making that raise awareness of real‐life issues and discrimination, and the main exponent in Canberra is Rebus Theatre.
Rebus was the winner of the 2014 Chief Minister’s Excellence in Inclusion Award and was nominated for the Kate Louise Alderson Award by the ACT Down Syndrome Association for making a significant contribution to people with Down Syndrome and their families in the ACT.
News is to hand of a new partnership between Rebus and Tuggeranong Arts Centre that will see the ensemble working out of Tuggeranong Arts Centre in 2015, with the centre offering rehearsal and office space and use of centre facilities.
Rebus artistic director, the well-known Canberra clown and commedia dell’arte performer, Robin Davidson, describes the arrangement as an exciting move for the ensemble which began life in mid-2013 with the support of NICAN, the disability information and referral service.
“TAC plays a vital role in the Canberra arts scene and Rebus is very pleased to be associated with such a highly‐respected arts organisation,” Davidson said, adding, “The partnership will enable the ensemble to continue and extend its important work dealing with real‐life issues faced by people with disabilities in work situations and public places.”
Acting CEO at the centre, Narelle Phillips, says, “We hope by formally acknowledging and building on the relationship we’ve had with Rebus Theatre for the past 12 months we can assist them to continue to deliver the wonderful work they are doing.”
Members of Rebus are also working on the other side of town with Belconnen Arts Centre in developing skills for ‘IGNITE’ Theatre participants who will perform at the Mindscapes Festival of art and mental health in October, and running Forum Theatre classes for people with and without disabilities in ACT Schools.
