SHANE Rattenbury has joined Libraries ACT in launching the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s annual book appeal.

“Each year the ACT Branch of the Children’s Book Council of Australia runs a book appeal, calling for donations of brand new books to be gifted to local disadvantaged children at Christmas time,” Shane said.

“The Canberra community are invited to help by donating new books during the month of August 2015.

“People interested in helping can donate new books suitable for children aged zero to 18 years of age. Donations can be dropped off at any public library branch across Canberra including Belconnen, Civic, Dickson, Erindale, Gungahlin, Kingston, Kippax, Tuggeranong and Woden.

“Libraries ACT has supported the appeal since 2013 and in 2014 with the help of Libraries ACT, the ACT branch of the book appeal gave over 1,000 books to underprivileged children within Canberra and Queanbeyan.

“The demand for books is often greater than the number of books received and Libraries ACT hopes to continue building awareness for the appeal and provide more children with their own book at Christmas.

“A book is such a meaningful gift to give to a child, one that offers entertainment, aids social development and has long-term educational benefits.

“And importantly, these gifts brighten Christmas for many disadvantaged children in Canberra and Queanbeyan,” Mr Rattenbury concluded.

All donated books are distributed through charities and refuges in the Canberra region. The appeal coincides with Children’s Book Council of Australia Book Week Awards, The Reading Hour, and the start of Literacy and Numeracy Week.
