HANNAH Wandel has been announced a semi-finalist in the prestigious Australian Women’s Weekly Qantas Women of the Future competition, for her work with youth non-profit organisation Country to Canberra.

As Founder and Executive Director, Hannah is urging the local community to get behind the organisation, saying the award will enable Country to Canberra to empower more girls to reach their leadership potential.

“If we win the award, the prize will fund 10 additional ‘Power Trips’ for rural girls to meet high-profile female leaders in the ACT, and it will kick-start a nationwide leadership seminar series in country schools,” Hannah said.

“I hope Canberrans get behind one of their own and help us take out the People’s Choice award, as it would give girls increased opportunities to build leadership skills and learn from women who have broken the glass ceiling.”

Hannah says that Canberra is the perfect place to inspire young women to go after big ambitions in politics and business.

“Last year, Country to Canberra brought three girls on ‘Power Trips’ to the nation’s capital to meet female movers and shakers, including Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, which inspired the girls to go after their dreams. The award would allow us to offer these opportunities to even more young women.

“It’s a huge honour to be a semi-finalist for such a high-profile award, and we’re so grateful that our volunteer organisation has been recognised.”

Currently, Country to Canberra is funded by small community grants from the Layne Beachley Aim for the Stars Foundation, the National Rural Women’s Coalition and the SA Government.

More details can be found on the Country to Canberra website and votes can be cast until 19 August 2015 through the Women’s Weekly Women of the Future website.
