THE ACT Government has sold Yarralumla Garden Centre to its next-door neighbour.
The Garden Centre has been the retail arm of the government owned Yarralumla Nursery since 1994, but as of tomorrow will be absorbed into the privately-owned business next door, Heritage Nursery.Phillip Perram, executive director of Business Enterprise Services within the Territory and Municipal Services directorate, says the new owners will continue to offer the Garden Centre’s existing range of hardy, cold climate natives, and that the Yarralumla
Nursery will still provide free plants to new home owners.
“Yarralumla Nursery, which celebrates its 100th birthday this year, will return to its original focus of being a wholesale nursery providing cool-climate plants for Canberra’s public parks and streets as well as to landscaping contractors and retail outlets in the surrounding region,” Mr Perram says.
“The free plant issue scheme, which has operated since 1930, will continue to be provided through the wholesale section of the Nursery.”
“New home owners can now select from one of three packages, all valued at $220. Species of plants in each package will continue to be suitable for our local climatic and soil conditions.”
The decision to sell the Garden Centre was made last year due to the drought of the last decade along with “competitive pressures”, he explains.
A 100th birthday party will be held at the nursery on Sunday, April 6.
