MICK Gentleman says that work on the new Erindale Bus Station will commence in late-2015 with the $0.9 million construction contract awarded to Simeonov Civil Engineering (ACT) Pty Ltd.

“I am pleased to announce Simeonov Civil Engineering as the successful company for the construction of the Erindale Bus Station which will provide greater opportunities for transit-oriented development in the area,” Mick said.

“Erindale Group Centre is a vital community hub down south and it is vital that we ensure public transport is easily accessible, safe and comfortable for everyone to use, day and night.

“The two existing bus stops and passenger facilities on Comrie Street in Erindale will be upgraded to major stop standards.

“The Erindale Bus Station will provide increased space for buses, bike racks and comfortable seating sheltered from the elements. Construction work will involve the installation of a new 12 metre long bus shelter on the west side of the Erindale Shopping Centre.

“The new bus station can accommodate four buses at once, which is important for the busy Erindale Centre. Seven bus routes currently service the shopping centre each day, dropping off and picking up on Comrie Street.

“The streetscape will also be improved with artwork to brighten up the blank facade which is the current back drop of the area.

“The new bus station will revitalise the area and is expected to encourage greater patronage from the east and south east areas including Tuggeranong and the suburbs of Fadden, Chisholm and Isabella Plains. It will commence the shopping centre’s transformation into a new transport hub, better connecting it to other town centres and Canberra more broadly.

“Infrastructure such as the Erindale Bus Station is key to making Canberra a more convenient and sustainable city as part of the ACT Governments Integrated Transport Network,” Minister Gentleman concluded.
