THE Chair of the Woodlands and Wetlands Trust, Alison Russell-French, has welcomed the announcement that the Australian Government will contribute $600,000 to help expand the Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary.
“It is fantastic to be at the Threatened Species Summit in Melbourne and thank the Australian Government for this contribution,” Alison said.
“As the site of innovative reintroduction programs for species previously extinct on the mainland or even regionally in our woodlands, the Sanctuary is playing a key role in helping halt the decline of our unique woodlands flora and fauna.
“This funding will help expand the Sanctuary, providing more space for more species and stronger populations of threatened and endangered biodiversity.
“The feral free area at the Sanctuary will at least be doubled, and planning for the sanctuary expansion is now underway.
“This investment from the Australian Government complements the work of a Green Army team and support for the Bush Stone-curlew reintroduction to the Sanctuary.
“It also builds on the funding provided by the ACT Government and reflects an active partnership working to achieve biodiversity outcomes and mitigate past adverse impacts on our native species.”
“Our own Bettong Bungalow campaign is aiming to raise a further $600,000 through corporate and individual donations to maximise the expansion of the predator–proof fence”
