POLICE officers caught a suspected jewel thief yesterday after spotting him by chance in Civic.
At around 12.30pm yesterday, officers were patrolling Petrie Plaza when they saw a man who physically resembled the offender in CCTV footage of a burglary that occurred at 10pm on Saurday night, at a jewellery store on Mort Street, Civic.
During the burglary a man wearing distinctive clothing was captured on camera removing jewellery from a display cabinet.
Yesterday at around 5.30pm, police searched an Ainslie house where they located and seized clothing they believed was worn by the offender during the burglary.
The 42-year-old man was arrested and charged with burglary and theft.
He was expected to face the ACT Magistrates court today. Police will oppose bail.
