TONIGHT’S the night — Ainslie and Gorman Arts Centres are throwing an opening party to unveil refurbishments from 6pm.
Ainslie Arts Centre (the music hub housed in the old Ainslie Public School just around the corner from Gorman) will be illuminated inside and out with a light show commissioned from the ANU School of Art Digital Media Workshop.
Arts Minister Joy Burch will do the honours by officially unveiling the $1.5 million refurbishments to the Ainslie Arts Centre, a JS Murdoch building. Capital upgrades at both arts centres represent the first such investment in the new millennium, under a master plan for the 5,700m2 centres.
With a newly renovated interior, the Ainslie Arts Centre has three sound-insulated tuition pods, nine classrooms, broadband enabled co-working spaces and two large halls. Gorman Arts Centre features a range of venues, including landscaped courtyards, multi-use performance spaces, meeting spaces and a broadband enabled co-working hub.
Staged from 6pm till late today Friday, July 10, a “multi-arts extravaganza” will feature performers and musicians, roving entertainment, a bar, food stalls and audio-visual installations.
Today’s program will include Slow Turismo featuring Brass Knuckle Brass Band, Faux Amis, Playful Sound (Danny Wild) and DJ Deggs. Participating artists include Alexander Boynes, Michelle Day, Marie Hagerty, Peter Vandermark, Alex Asch, Mariana del Castillo and Danny Wild.
Ainslie and Gorman Arts Centre director, Joseph Falsone, says: As well as being a great party, the launch event will celebrate the beginning of great new things for most significant arts centres. In partnership with the ACT Government, artsACT, and our resident artists and organisations, re restoring the heritage character of these truly unique precincts, and realising their full potential as arts centres”
