The Canberra International Women’s Day chapter, on behalf of the Australian National Committee for UN Women, hosts this annual signature event, which this year features MC Virginia Haussegger and a panel that includes Stott Despoja, Elzira Sagynbaeva and Adi Tafuna’i, to lead the discussion on how to continue the fight to end poverty for women and children in 2014.
The Australian National Committee for UN Women’s fundraising focus this International Women’s Day is “Ending Poverty for Women and Girls through Economic Empowerment”. Figures show that globally, 70 per cent of the poor are women; women are far more likely to live in poverty because of discrimination and lack of access to education, employment and financial access. Although women perform two-thirds of the world’s work, they earn less than 10 per cent of the world’s wages.
All funds raised at the lunch will go to the Gender Equality Fund; directly to economic empowerment projects that help lift women and girls in the region, out of poverty. It will provide education, and paid work opportunities and help to give hope for the future.
Bookings and information for the lunch at the National Convention Centre is at events.ticketbooth.com.au/events/17940.
