SIMON Corbell says a report by three leading international climate change organisations has ranked the ACT’s emissions reduction targets as the second strongest in the world.
The report, Unlocking Ambition: Top Corporate and Sub-national climate commitments, by the Carbon Disclosure Project and the Climate Group, and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, released ahead of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change meeting in Bonn, Germany, lists the ACT as having the equal second highest emissions reduction target of any state or region in the world.
“I am pleased that the ACT is being recognised by a global institution for our leadership on climate change. The ACT’s emissions reduction target of 80% below 1990 levels by 2050 is equal second highest,” Simon said.
“While the ACT’s target ranks well against progressive international counterparts such as New York and California, it’s even more significant that our strong emissions reduction targets are stimulating the growth in terms of jobs and investment in a renewable energy economy.”
The ACT was the only Australian state or region to be included on the state/region list, which included California, New York, Scotland, British Columbia and Ontario.
“The ACT is well on track to meet its first legislated emissions target of 40% below 1990 levels by 2020, largely through major investments in renewable energy, with 40MW of solar and 200MW of wind capacity already secured under its innovative reverse auction system.”
