MICK Gentleman has announced to start of part-time traffic signals installed on the eastern approach to the Isabella Drive/Drakeford Drive/Athllon Drive roundabout.
“The part-time signals will be operational from Thursday morning’s peak period from 7.30 am. The lights will typically operate from 7.30 am to 9.10 am Monday to Friday to relieve congestion by more equitably balancing delays,” Mick said.
“Supportive signage has been installed to make sure motorists know when the traffic lights are active. Yellow lights on the signs will flash while the lights are in operation.
“The lights will improve the flow of traffic northbound on Drakeford Drive which is a major thoroughfare for the ACT’s south-western suburbs in the Tuggeranong Valley including Conder, Gordon and Banks.
“While there will inevitably be an increase in delays for Isabella Drive traffic which will be experiencing the part-time signals for the first time, the timing of the lights will be tweaked as required to ensure the lights are working harmoniously with traffic conditions.
“A part-time traffic signal was installed at the Athllon Drive approach to the roundabout in 2005, however, increasing traffic volumes on Drakeford Drive and feedback from the community on queue lengths indicated further improvements were needed.
“The existing part-time traffic signals on Athllon Drive will continue to operate from 4.20 pm to 6.10 pm Monday to Friday to create gaps in the traffic on Athllon Drive, allowing Drakeford Drive traffic to proceed south.”
Mick said the new traffic signals will only display red and amber lights. When no light is visible the driver is able to proceed in the direction they are heading if it is safe to do so. Athllon Drive and Isabella Drive traffic will still be required to give way at the roundabout.
