When it comes to singing teachers – and wouldn’t all of us like to sing? – Canberrans are spoilt for choice.
Pianist Rose Holcombe
Tomorrow’s “Wednesday Lunchtime Live” at Wesley Music Centre showcases the students of that glorious soprano, Louise Page, singing a range of favourite songs and arias.
The selection of songs, arias and ensembles will range from the baroque to the 20th century, performed by soprano Fiona Bender ,dramatic soprano Julie Wee and bass baritone Patrick Solomon, all accompanied by Rose Holcombe on piano.
Bender has sung for more than 25 years with choirs and chamber choruses in Albury and in Canberra. She has been a soloist with, and part of the church choirs of Holy Rosary Watson, St Thomas More’s Campbell and St Christopher’s Cathedral and has sung as a soloist with Kaleidoscope Queanbeyan and with the Canberra opera chorus singing with the South East Regional Touring Opera Company/Melbourne Opera in productions of ‘La Boheme’, ‘La Traviata’, ‘The Merry Widow’ and ‘Carmen’.
Dramatic soprano, Julia Wee
Wee moved to Canberra to pursue further studies in vocal performance at the ANU. In 2013 she completed her degree studies under the tutelage of Page and Alan Hicks, with whom she continues to study. She sang the role of Florence Pike in Britten’s ‘Albert Herring, where her performance was reviewed as “gender-bendingly good”. She was awarded the Llewellyn Choir prize for Best Vocalist in the 2012 Margaret Smiles Accompaniment Competition.
Bass-baritone Patrick Solomon
Solomon has studied singing since he was 16. He has been a chorus member in both the Melbourne Opera’s production of ‘Carmen’ and the ANU Interhall’s production of ‘Spamalot!’ He is currently studying singing under Page and hopes to pursue a music degree in the future.
Rose Holcombe completed a Bachelor of Music and a Graduate Diploma in Piano Performance at the ANU School of Music in 2002. Since then she has taught piano from her own studio and at primary schools in Canberra.
