WHAT’S in the number 15? A lot today, Friday the 15th, when “Festival 15” will match 15 Bands!   15 Minutes! and 15 Bucks!

It’s the eighth appearance of Festival 15, which only ever happens on the 15th of the month, but this time, the arithmetically-minded organisers are saying, the numbers themselves are taking it to the next level, as it is indeed 15/05/15.

Organiser Mike E. Stanker tells us that six years ago the band Rotten Opera told him they were not ready to play a show because they only had 15 minutes worth of material, so, voila, Festival 15 was born.

Described as “an amazing showcase of local talent”, this year Festival 15 features genres from funk to rock, acoustic to metal, hip-hop, electro, folk and a couple of supergroups created exclusively for this event. Another unique feature of F15 is that all set times are drawn out of a hat just before show-time, so knows the order in which the bands will appear until the first act starts.

Each act get a 15 minute set, and by using 2 stages it means the music never stops until the last band is done. By our calculations, that means the whole gig runs for 225 minutes, but you can bet there’s be time for a drink after the music subsides.

Festival 15, at The Basement, 2 Cohen St Belconnen, 8pm, tonight Friday May 15 until late. Tickets $15 at the door.

We can’t tell you the precise times, but we can tell you the line-up:

CINNAMON LANE: an acoustic duo with Cherie Kotek and Seppy from Renegade Peacock

CASTERS: an up and coming young band with more funk than the Red Hot Chilli Peppers

LOCAL HORROR: featuring members of Variodivers, Time & Weight, Gasma and more

IK+: a supergroup featuring members of Looking Glass, Penguin, Log and more

CORPUS COLLESEUM: local hip hop duo gaining a lot of momentum

NA MAZA: one of the hardest working bands in the local metal scene

TAFFY: solo and acoustic just starting out

TIGERFLESH: another supergroup keeping a very tight lid on their performance so far

LEISURE SUIT LENNY: one guy who plays drums, guitar and sings…all at the same time

LOUD SO CLEAR: local rockers who are very nearly veterans of the Canberra scene

TEEN SKANK PARADE: recently reformed flat out rock n roll

HATING ALICE: pub rockers with tonnes of experience and talent
